1960S JAPAN:
ART OUTSIDE THE BOX
Guest-edited by Reiko Tomii
(Josai University's Review of Japanese Culture and Society, vol. 17)
This special issue "1960s Japan: Art Outside the Box" explores the radical and unorthodox practices of 1960s art in Japan.
It features the English translation of the curator Kuroda Raiji's landmark studies of two Anti-Art collectives, Neo Dada and Kyushu-ha; and the original research of Kevin Concannon on the Tokyo manifestation of John and Yoko's War Is Over! project in 1969. These in-depth studies are accompanied by the proceedings of the First PoNJA-GenKon Symposium (Yale University, 2004), including the English translation of film scripts by Terayama Shuji (Emperor Tomato Ketchup) and Nagano Chiaki (Some Young People, documentary of the Tokyo avant-garde). "Featured Fiction" is Yoko Ono's hilarious feminist satire, "The Saga of Japanese Men Sinking."
