IKEMIZU!
1964-2004
"Ikemizu! 1964-2004" chronicles the "voyage in contemporary art" over the past 40 years taken by Ikemizu Keiichi, an inventive performance and conceptual artist in postwar Japan.
Based in the Osaka-Kyoto region, Ikemizu first made his name by literally putting himself in a cage at an outdoor art exhibition in 1965. His works are often large-scale and project-based outdoor installations (as in "Steal Pipes Go to the Sea," 1994) or conceptually-based examinations of life-forms and ecology (as in "Camels in Japan," 1973). He has also been the leader of The Play, a unique collective that staged a series of memorable outdoor Happenings from 1967 onward. His work was featured in "YOKOHAMA 2005: International Triennale of Contemporary Art."
This volume documents his works through photographs and other documentary materials; it also includes a comprehensive set of documents concerning The Play's "Voyage: Happening in an Egg" (releasing of a 3.3-meter fiberglass egg into the ocean in 1969) and a list of its works through 2000.
The English texts include informative essays by curator Kuroda Raiji and critic Hariu Ichiro as well as brief descriptions of the works by Ikemizu and The Play.
